What does a Periodontal, Dental Implant and Oral Medicine Specialist do?

Generally referred to as a Periodontist in the medical and dental fields, a periodontist is a dentist who received extensive post graduate training in:

1

The prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth also known as gum disease)
2

The placement of dental implants.
3

The diagnosis and treatment of chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region.

In addition to the above, periodontists also provide a variety of other specialised services. These include scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of a tooth’s root is cleaned), root surface debridement (in which damaged root tissue is removed), oral inflammation treatment, orthodontic exposures, and cosmetic periodontal procedures.

Do I need to be referred by my Dentist?

No, you can self-refer. Although most of our patients are referrals from dentists, you are welcome to schedule an appointment with us directly if you show symptoms of gum disease or are looking for a permanent solution to (a) missing tooth/teeth.

Some patients who require straightforward periodontal treatment can be managed by a general dentist. Similarly, some general dentists also perform dental implant procedures.

However, in light of extensive research suggesting that periodontal disease can be linked to stroke, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases, more challenging periodontal treatment may require a higher level of expertise that only a trained specialist in periodontology can provide.

Within the dental profession, periodontists are known as the masters of both hard tissue (teeth and bones) and soft tissue (gums, cheeks, etc.). Placing a successful dental implant requires extensive knowledge of both tissue types.
